Make a Commitment to Start Self-Promoting Now by Starting with What Feels Easiest
When you are new to self-promotion, it can feel very unnatural. For this reason, you may want to start out slowly trying out different ways to promote yourself. You can promote yourself through your writing, via audio, video, or even in person and online at live events.
The best course of action is to do something, anything, to help promote yourself while working your way into the ideas that frighten you the most.
For example, you may want to start with something simple like writing. Start with writing your bio. Write different versions of your bio so that you have a short bio, a medium bio, and a super long book-sized bio. Then you can grab from there to create your elevator speech that you may end up using in person someday.

For some people, speaking is much easier than writing. You’re in luck if that’s true for you. With the technology available today, you can turn anything you record, whether audio or video, into text. Thus, killing two birds (or more) with one stone. For example, have a friend interview you and ask questions that help you create a biography that tells your audience all about you in the terms that work for them. After the recording is done, you can get it transcribed. Edit the transcription to create blog posts, a report, and more.
Once you’ve written and recorded an interview, it shouldn’t be that hard to start talking to people in groups and even individually. Try going to some local meetups to practice your elevator speech before going to larger events. Try your elevator speech out on your family at your next party or event. They can give you support and feedback to help you make it better, but since they’re not experts, the main thing is that you’re just doing it so that eventually it feels normal.
See, here’s the thing – no matter what it is that you need to do to increase self-promotion, whether it’s writing, audio, video, or something in person really doesn’t matter as much as your willingness to practice and learn. The more you practice anything, the more comfortable you’ll be doing it later. Try to remember that even a surgeon must do their first cut on a live patient eventually. That’s life or death and while you may feel as if you’re dying when you say yes to public speaking or going to an event to promote yourself – you really won’t die, nor will you kill anyone.
It all starts with the first step. Start with what you feel confident doing now if you don’t feel confident about any of it, start with one. Pick it out of a hat if you must. But, make a commitment to start self-promoting now. It’s never too early to get going on promotion. Promoting yourself is what will make or break your business. Not promoting is not an option so you may as well do what works best even if it’s scary and uncomfortable.
