New Challenge: Get Confident Tooting Your Own Horn
You’re about to embark on a challenge that is going to seriously make every single challenge you take afterword more effective. That’s the challenge to toot your own horn!
Tooting your own horn simply means taking the credit when the credit is due by admitting that you did something amazing or that you do something amazing.
The simple truth is that if you don’t do it, no one else will. And if you don’t do it, you won’t get the credit or advancement you deserve from life. Learning to toot your own horn can make a huge difference in the rest of your success. But there are ways to do it without seeming like a self-serving jerk, so don’t worry. Tooting your own horn doesn’t require that you become a braggart or an obnoxious jerk. In fact, you can be quite humble and still take credit when it’s due.
Take Credit for Your Own Accomplishments
When you have done something positive for someone else or created a product that solves problems for a lot of people, you should take credit for your part in coming up with the idea and implementing the process or creation of the product. Standing up and saying “Yes, I did that” is not wrong or bragging. You did it. You deserve the credit for your accomplishments.
Share Team Credit Freely
When taking credit for something, always give credit to your team as well in a very free manner. Mentioning your team when taking credit is a great way to ensure that they feel respected. Plus, they’ll work even harder for you when they learn that you reward work well done.
Praise Others Lavishly
When you take credit for something, it's proper to also at the same time apply praise to others in a lavish way. Don’t skimp ever on your praise of others for true work done that you appreciate. The truth is when you are honest with your praise for them and yourself, everything will seem very natural.
Don’t Blow Smoke
When you do take credit, don’t add to it things that aren’t true or even are slightly exaggerated. It’s okay to do that when you’re talking to someone else about their accomplishments but never do it for yourself so that you don’t appear to be a bloated narcissist.
Say Please & Thank You
Always tell people thank you when they give you a compliment. Accepting credit sometimes just means saying, “Thank you very much” to the person who has given you the credit. When you talk to others, being polite goes far. Please and thank you are words that you should say often.
Let go of the fear associated with taking credit for your own work. You’re not doing anything wrong to act like the rock star you are and to take credit for doing the work necessary to become that rock star.
