Here's How to Make Your Family Nights a Success
Spending time with the kids is important, but it can be challenging knowing what to do with your quality time together.
Starting a family night is a great way to get into the habit of coming together. There are lots of ways to spend family nights regardless of how old your kids are. To give you a little inspiration, below we’ll reveal some of the best ways to start a family night with your kids.
Pick What Day to Host Family Night
Ideally, you’ll want to have family night on the same day each week. That way, everyone knows that whichever day you set as family night, is going to be time spent together.
It helps you to make family night a habit. All the family will also know not to make plans for that particular day of the week. Of course, it also helps you to plan what you’re going to do easier. So, pick a night which works best for everyone and stick to it.
Set a NO Phone Rule
The whole point of family night is to spend time together. So, make sure you introduce a no phone rule. That means, neither you or the kids can check or use your phones for a set time period.
This isn’t just going to make it easier to bond together, but it’s also healthier too. Everyone needs a little time without their phones to recharge and appreciate life in the moment.
Host a Movie Night
There are so many things you can do with your family nights. Hosting a movie night is one of the easiest and most enjoyable options.
You can have a family movie marathon, letting each family member take it in turns to pick the movie. We can’t guarantee there won’t be any arguments over the choice of movie, but if you plan ahead and have a list of movies everyone wants to watch on the night (or over multiple movie nights), it gives everyone the chance to get used to the idea!
Complete Family Projects
If you’re looking for a more unique way to spend time together, you can work on family projects. These could be craft related projects for example.
During the holidays, you could create seasonal crafts such as Christmas cards, Valentines Day cards and Easter decorations. Or, if you have the budget, you could buy craft sets you can work on together.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be craft related. You could also use family time to organize the home and tick off your to-do list. Each family member could be responsible for one specific task, such as cleaning out the pantry. If you have younger kids, they can help you carry out tasks.
It may not seem like the most exciting way to spend time together, but it makes it surprisingly more enjoyable working as a team to complete projects.
Try to Avoid Competitions
Although a little competition can be healthy, you might want to avoid activities which encourage it. The whole point of family time is to enjoy each other’s company and relax together. So, the last thing you need is arguments over who did better and who won.
Only opt for competition-based activities if you know your kids aren’t the overly competitive type.
There are lots of great ways to start a family night and the above are just some of them. Making sure you have family night on the same day each week will help you to get into the routine of spending time together. You may even find it’s something the whole family starts to look forward to.
